June Music Lesson Resource

Get ready for a fin-tastic music game (sorry, not sorry)! This month we’re visiting a card game classic- Musical Go Fish!

How it Works:

You know this one! Deal out five cards and try to make as many pairs as possible from your hand, or ask your opponent for a match. Musical Go Fish is different in that the cards themselves are made up of treble and 🐟 clef notes, as well as rhythm symbols including: quarter rest, quarter notes, half notes, dotted half notes, and whole notes. Whoever has the most matches in the end wins!

What’s Included/Set Up:

In the Musical Go Fish PDF, there are three pages of card decal backs, and three pages of playing card fronts.

Cut out each card. Place each card decal back to back with each playing card front inside a laminator sheet. I recommend this over printing double sided, as the two separate sheets makes the cards thicker, and avoids the issue of seeing the answer through the card. Cut out your laminated cards (round the edges if they’re too sharp), and get fishing!

What theory concepts does this support?

Not only does this game address note/rhythm symbol recognition, but also recalling the name of each card. In Musica Go Fish, it’s essential that each player says the correct name of the note/symbol when asking their opponent, otherwise they miss out on a match! For some students, it could be helpful to go through the cards beforehand in a “flashcards” style as a warm up/review.

Short, sweet, and simple:

And that’s it! This game is a classic most folks know and love. One of my students got a kick out of the bass clef acting as the fish hook on the back of the cards, and everyone has had lots of fun with this new warm up/cool down game which they are already fans of. I hope it makes for a nice and engaging addition to your music game portfolio as well!
