Music Therapy Assessment

A music therapy assessment may take place before any individual music therapy sessions are scheduled. During the assessment, we take the time to get to know the client, what their needs are, and how music therapy can be most beneficial for them. We will write a report based off data from the assessment and include recommended goals and objectives for music therapy sessions. The assessment typically lasts around an hour and a half. We spend the first half interviewing the client and family members or caregivers. The second half is spent working directly with the client and assessing need through music interventions.

Individual Music Therapy

Individual music therapy sessions are one-on-one sessions scheduled directly between the client and the music therapist. The therapist employees music therapy interventions to address quantifiable goals that were established during the assessment with the client. Some goals may work hand-in-hand with goals from other therapies as well. The data from sessions are tracked to measure client progress.

We offer options for 30, 45, and 60 minute sessions. Sessions typically occur on a weekly basis, but can occur several times a week if found appropriate. Most often, sessions take place at the client’s home or our office in Columbia, but we are happy to conduct sessions at a facility- such as a day habilitation or assisted living facility- as long as we have the facility’s permission.

Group Music Therapy

Group music therapy sessions take place with individuals who share a similar need- such as socialization, emotional processing, or cognitive stimulation- from the music therapy sessions. These sessions are ideal for settings such as day habilitations, hospitals, behavioral health units, support groups, or assisted living facilities. Group sessions also provide wonderful opportunities for socialization and a development of community.

We offer options for 30, 45, 60, and 90 minute sessions. Sessions typically occur on a weekly basis, but can occur several times a week if found appropriate. Groups of 4 or less have the option of taking place at a client’s home, but groups larger than that must occur in a facility setting such as a behavioral health unit, recreation center, or assisted living facility.
